Submissions

We will not consider unsolicited full manuscripts. Please do NOT submit them. We do wish to know more about your project however, so instead, write to us with an initial submission describing your project, together with brief outline of your personal history and ONE sample chapter or section of no more than 20 pages of double-spaced 12-point text printed on paper. Do remember to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with enough postage to cover the return of your submission.

We will not consider any work that is not presented in a professional, properly edited form. All material must be printed, not handwritten or typed, in a standard face such as Times New Roman or Arial, at 12-point size. It must be double-spaced on one side only of plain white 80gsm A4 paper. Please do not use any fancy typefaces or formatting. Do not submit on disk.

Please, NEVER, EVER present an initial submission by email under any circumstances. It will not be considered and your email address will be permanently blocked.

Once we have read your initial submission we will reply. This may take four to six weeks depending on our workload, but we will try to reply as quickly as possible. Please do not contact us regarding your initial submission until at least six weeks have passed. If you wish to be absolutely sure that we receive the work we recommend the Royal Mail Recorded Delivery Service, which is very inexpensive.

Our reply will take one of three forms:

a: A rejection. This will be accompanied by a brief explanation of why we have rejected the work.

b: A qualified rejection. This will be accompanied by a longer explanation of the reasons why we have rejected the work. This form means that we think that we might be able to publish the work if major modifications are carried out. If you wish you may then revise your work following our suggestions and re-submit. We will not penalise you because you have re-submitted a work we have already seen.

c: A qualified acceptance. This is also qualified because the full manuscript will still have to be read before we can make a final decision.

Please note that if you receive a qualified acceptance it will be accompanied by a reference number. You MUST quote this number on any correspondence regarding this work in the future and write it clearly on the outside of any envelopes or packaging. Failure to do so may result in serious delays.

If your submission is given a qualified acceptance, we will still have to read the whole manuscript before making a final decision. This MUST be in digital format, as either a Word document (.doc,) a Rich Text File (.rtf,) or a Portable Document File (.pdf.) The manuscript must be double-spaced, 12-point in a regular typeface—we prefer Times New Roman or Arial. NO fancy formatting please. It must be properly spelled and grammatically correct in accordance with the language it is written in. You will be given a specific email address to which to submit the manuscript, or you can submit it on disk. Please do not use the general email link above. Full instructions will accompany a Qualified Acceptance.

We will then read the full manuscript. We may pass it round several of our editors for their opinions, so be patient.

Once we have read your full manuscript we will decide whether we wish to proceed and at that stage we will get in touch with you directly if there are any matters we wish to discuss or clarify. Once all is in order, we will send you a formal Publisher’s Offer. This will set out the terms of the contract which we are offering.
