Mentoring Cost Breakdown POD Publishing E-Publishing

How it Works

Here are some sample breakdowns of book production costs and revenue. Please note that these prices are subject to change without notice as we are dependent on the fees we are charged by our printers and other parties, over which we have no control. However the examples do provide a reasonable guide and are accurate at time of writing.

The first example is based on a book as follows: 234x156mm, up to 200 pages, soft cover, full colour cover, monochrome text/line art.

Publisher services:

Proof-reading, editing, typesetting, layout and design; cover art production, body colour/text or author’s art/text; all printer set-up fees; all registration fees; provide ISBN and barcode; retain on file one year; register with suppliers and distributors; submit copies to Legal Deposit Libraries in UK; build web page on our site and add to our sales list; provide 20 copies to author. Please note that these costs do not include shipping to you, but are for books at our premises.

Publishing Fee (including first 20 books) £1000

Author price of further copies £4 each (at our premises)

Retail price £11.99 (suggested)

Costs

Revenue
Publishing fee/first 20 books £1000
Further 100 copies £400
Total
    £1400
        Sell 120 copies@ £11.99. £1438.80

So an initial investment would be fully recouped after only 120 sales.

Here’s an example of the same book, but this time the author sells 1000 copies.

Costs

Revenue
Publisher Fees £1000
Further 980 books £3920
Total   £4920
You sell 1000 books at retail £11990
  Profit £7070

Now you would probably spend some more money on marketing and advertising and this might bring your net profit down to around £5000. But for an author to make £5000, or even £2500 as in the previous example, on a thousand books would be utterly impossible in traditional publishing and this really marks the difference between the two systems. Traditional publishing can make huge amounts of money for large publishing companies and a few best-selling authors do extremely well out of it; publishers like PlashMill Press are in business to make a reasonable amount and assist many authors to make an income from their work.

But you will not be selling alone; we sell through the retail trade across the UK, via Amazon and through our website. We offer generous royalty percentages to authors for the sales we make through the book trade and direct.

Remember too that though we are small publishers now, we are a young business and have very big ideas. We will get bigger but as we do so we will remain true to our basic philosophy of working closely with our authors to get great work published.

Finally, once you are published with us you will be a real published author. Even a thousand book sales behind you can open a lot of doors.
