Scottish Horror Stories

NEW! PlashMill Press will be publishing a collection of Scottish Horror Stories later this year and we are considering submissions now. Authors may submit up to five stories each.

Stories must:

Be around 5,000 words, no less than 3,000 and no more than 7,000

Be original unpublished material

Have some Scottish element in the narrative

Be genuinely scary!

Stories may:

Be in either Scots or English

Be set in the past, present or future

Be psychological, supernatural, political, high suspense or terror in genre-- the only real requirement is that the story really makes us shiver

Authors may be:

Of any age

Of any religion or ethnicity

Based anywhere in the world

Successful submissions will be paid a one-off fee on publication of the book. The amount is still to be decided but will be in line with market rates and will include an option to e-publish should we wish to. Selected authors must provide a short biography for inclusion in the book. All authors whose work is included will receive a complimentary copy of the book and may buy further copies at a discounted price. Authors will retain all rights in their work except that: once work has been accepted for this collection the author may not publish it elsewhere until twelve months after our publication appears; PlashMill Press will retain a non-exclusive option to publish the work in any future publications on payment of 50% of the initial fee for each publication.

Please do not delay. We have not yet set a deadline for submissions but one will be announced here when it has been decided, so keep an eye on this page. As soon as the deadline has passed we will make our final decision about which stories to include.

Email your story: To submit by e-mail read the notes below and then send your story HERE

Please note the following before submitting:

We will not consider any work that is not presented in a professional, properly edited form. All material must be in a standard face such as Times New Roman or Arial, at 12-point size, and double-spaced. Work must be spelled consistently with respect to the language it is written in and must be properly punctuated.

Files should be named in the form "authorname.title.filetype", for example johnsmith.vampires.doc and files must be a recognised word-processor format, pc compatible. Files MUST be editable. Please don't send PDF documents as they are a right pain to edit. Files should simply be attached to a covering email.

Remember to attach a biography and full contact details.

Please allow thirty days for consideration of your submission; this period may be extended at our discretion. We will communicate with you by email. Your contact information will be kept on file by PlashMill Press unless you ask us to delete it. However it will not be sold or passed on to any other organisation without your consent.

POSTAL SUBMISSIONS

If submitting on paper, please don't forget to include a valid e-mail address.

Work must be printed, not typed or hand-written, in 12-point double-spaced on one side only of plain white 80gsm A4 paper. Please do not use any fancy typefaces or formatting.

It would help greatly if you would make sure the title of the piece, your name and the page number are on the header of each page. We require an overall word count to be supplied and this should be on the title page. Your biogaphical details should also be appended.

If you want the work back you must enclose a stamped addressed return envelope.

Postal submissions should be addressed to:

SCHOOLS! If you are a teacher and you think you have a budding M.R.James, H.P.Lovecraft or Stephen King, or maybe all three, in your class, please get in touch-- we will be delighted to discuss ideas with you and of course your school will be credited if any work is selected, along with the incentives above.
