PlashMill Press is proud to announce the publication
of A Boy's Own Offshore Adventure, by Brian Page. As a young man in the early 1970's, Brian
was working as a lecturer when he heard of the fame an fortune to
be made "up North" on "The Oil."
No sooner had he made his first phone call
than he was whisked up to Aberdeen on the first available flight,
which, as he says, were not that often in those days.
For the next thirty years, "The Oil"
was Brian's life, and in this book he reveals, for the very first
time, what life was really like for the "Offshore Tigers"
and "Roughy Toughy Oil Men" who wrestled the hard-earned
riches from deep below the sea.
Played out by Brian himself and a cast of
larger-than-life characters, you will hear the story of how to moor
a tanker as tall as a skyscraper to a tiny bouy; how it is possible
to produce more oil than is possible; what happens when you take a
free ride in the platform's helicopter; being wakened in the middle
of the night as a Supply Ship smashes into the platform, and Sunday-morning
sailing on one of the lifeboats, a great diversion till it breaks
down and you have to be rescued. It's all told in a relaxed, funny,
highly readable style by a man who knows what it was like, because
he was there.
