If we accept your work
If you receive a Publisher’s
Offer from us then you must read this very carefully and consider its
terms, as the Offer will contain a contract which, if signed and returned
within the stated period, is legally binding on both parties. We will
normally allow 30 days for you to consider our offer, but this may be
extended, at our discretion, at your request.
Once we receive your signed Publisher’s
Offer contract you will be asked to submit a full manuscript printed
out in double-space 12-point on one side only of A4 paper, with the
pages numbered. We realise this amounts to a lot of paper but our proof-readers
and editors need this. The paper manuscript, now called a “proof”
will be proof-read and marked up by your editor before being returned
to you for correction. You must make the corrections on your computer.
If you feel that we have suggested corrections that are unjustified,
then we will be happy to discuss these with you, but you must realise
that the Publisher’s decision is final in these matters.
Once you have made the corrections
you will be asked to submit the manuscript again, as a digital file
this time. You will be given precise instructions at the time but we
will accept files in most cross-platform formats, for example Word documents
or Rich Text Files. Provided that we are happy that all corrections
have been made we will then proceed to the layout and design stage.
If the book is text-only, then we will typeset the document and create
title and title obverse pages. If there are line-art illustrations we
will place them in the pages, and if there are half-tone plates to be
inserted we will mark up the file and prepare these. Please do not attempt
to do any of this yourself. At this stage an ISBN number will be allocated
to the book and we will notify the ISBN Agency of its impending publication
so that details of the book can be inserted in its catalogue.
This form of the document, once
complete, will be emailed to you as a Portable Document File (.pdf.)
You will need a dedicated programme to read this file and we heartily
recommend Foxit Reader, which is free. There is a download link at the
bottom of this page. The benefit of the .pdf is that it shows exactly
how your work should look when printed.
Once this stage is completed we
will begin the cover design. If you have submitted an illustration or
picture you would like to use then we will consider this, but please
see our Guidelines for using pictures and illustrations page
first. Alternatively, you may ask us to produce a photograph
or illustration (for which we will charge a fee,) or you may
simply decide to use a plain self-colour cover. These can look very
well as long as the typography is properly executed. The barcode location
will be specified at this time, though the code itself will be added
later. Again, on completion, the cover design will be emailed to you
as a .pdf.
At last your book is ready to be
sent to the printers. In the event that the printer's proof is an accurate
reproduction of what has already been agreed, then printing will go
ahead. Please note that the printer's proof is simply to ensure that
the book is as we have specified; any content or layout changes at this
stage would incur extra costs. This is why we take so much time and
care in the earlier stages.
Once the book is printed we will
notify our distributors and create a specific page on our website where
people can download and view samples of the book, see the cover, read
about you and copies purchase copies on-line. If you have elected to
have us produce the book as an eBook, this will be available from the
website as well. There is also an on-line Book Trade Warehouse where
booksellers can register and order copies at trade prices. We will supply
sufficient copies to Amazon for them to show your book as “in
stock.” You will receive your Complimentary copies of the book
and we will submit copies of it to the Legal Deposit Libraries in the
United Kingdom and Ireland.
